It was said that when Drona asked Yudhisthira about Asvathamma, he wanted to know the truth. But Yudhisthira informed him about Ashvathamma’s death while suppressing that it was an elephant.
Now the chariot going down to ground is a very powerful metaphor. It probably meant that in Sanjaya’s eye Yudhisthira’s position was above the other warriors fighting in Kurushetra because he never committed wrong. While the others might have committed some thing wrong. With the above reply to his Guru, he also became grounded like others in the eye of Sanjaya. That was probably poetically told that his chariot touched the ground. It’s an excellent poetic metaphor to highlight how even Yudhisthira looked like the other warriors and lost his fame in the midst of Kurushetra war in the eyes of Sanjaya who was narrating the summary of war to his king Dritarastra.
